While Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) take an auto repair class, Martin (John Mahoney) drives Roz (Peri Gilpin) crazy by taking charge of her new puppy.
Frasier's BMW breaks down en route to the opera with Niles, Daphne (Jane Leeves) and his new date, Chelsea (Katherine Disque). Feeling humiliated by their lack of automotive skills, the car-impaired Cranes sign up for a night school course. Meanwhile, Roz quickly regrets asking Martin for help with her Dalmation puppy after he criticizes her every move, and even tries changing the dog's name.
Niles and Frasier are also in for a bumpy ride at their auto repair class, where they nearly ruin an engine. Unaccustomed to doing badly in school, they vow to quit. However, when Daphne tells Niles she's proud of him for taking the course, and Martin gives Frasier his granfather's tool box, they decide to stick it out.
Cramming for their next class, Niles and Frasier are appalled when Roz suggests they "coast" through the course rather than trying to "ace" it, but soon warm to the ideas of becoming slackers. Later, Roz has it out with Martin about the puppy, and he agrees to back off. After disrupting their class, Frasier and Niles are kicked out. Still eager to impress Daphne and Martin, the brothers visit a local copy shop, where they create fake certificates indicating they've passed the course.

Niles (David Hyde Pierce) and Frasier (Kelsey Grammer) resurrect the stage career of their boyhood idol, a has-been Shakespearean actor.
Frasier is appalled to see British performer Jackson Hedley (Derek Jacobi) signing autographs at a local sci-fi convention. Years earlier, Hedley's one-man show of Shakespearean soliloquies ignited Frasier and Niles' passion for "The Bard." Yet, since playing an android on the popular TV series "Space Patrol," Jackson has been hopelessly typecast in cheesy futuristic roles.
Determined to restore Hedley's artistic reputation, the Crane brothers decide to mount a rival of his Shakespearean showcase. They book a theater and promote the play all over Seattle. Unfortunately, after watching Jackson's first rehearsal, Frasier and Niles realize their childhood memories have betrayed them: Hedley is an untalented ham!
On opening night, Niles and Frasier are aghast to see a sell-out crowd. Fearing that Jackson's overblown theatrics will humiliate them in front of their snooty society friends, the Cranes try desperately to stop the curtain from going up. Despite their best efforts, nothing - not even a bone-breaking fall - can prevent Hedley from stepping on stage.

After a three-week bout with the flu, Sophia needs to take it easy. Dorothy wants Cypress Grove Retirement Home to keep an eye on her during the day, but knows her mother would never agree to staying there as a guest. She arranges a white lie with the owner to introduce Sophia as the new "activities director," but instead of getting rest, Sophia gets active - for her, it's not just a job, it's an adventure. Mr. Porter draws the line when she takes the residents for a walk that turns into a six-hour field trip. He tells Sophia the truth about her position: it was a put-up job.
Blanche is "discovered" by a print-ad photographer and asked to model for a Pennysaver ad. When she takes Rose along on the shoot, he decides to use Blanche's face and Rose's hands. Both women are excited until the first edition arrives - "Does your face look like this? Do your hands look like this? Then you need Ponce de Leon Anti-Aging Cream." Blanche launches a desperate effort to retrieve every copy distributed in the greater Miami area. Back at home, Sophia's getting plenty of rest, but she now appears as inactive as the residents at Cypress Grove. Dorothy faces the awkward responsibility of parenting her parent. She stops in to check on her mother, finds her gone and immediately deduces that Sophia snuck off to Cypress Grove. Sure enough, Dorothy catches Sophia in the middle of the Hokey-Pokey and tries to drag her home, but Sophia protests. Is she really so old that she can't make her own choices? Dorothy agrees they'll make decisions involving her, together. Mr. Porter agrees to changes as well and Sophia rejoins the Cypress Grove staff as the volunteer activities director. [CC] [TV-PG D] |

Blanche's date cancels, so she shifts to Plan B: Bushman. When Mel doesn't answer the phone, Blanche becomes frantic about his safety and drags her roommates over to check up on him. Turns out he wasn't dead, just vacationing, but the scare was enough to convince Blanche they're more than "insignificant others." Yabba dabba do, it must be love.
Rose took a shot at the weekend news reporter spot. Her audition assignment is a step toward the excitement she's been seeking - she's covering the Thirteenth Annual Miami Pet Dog Expo. Sophia offers sage journalistic advice: get the story, no matter what. Rose does, despite the annoying distraction of an armed robber who shakes down participants for random valuables. The station manager is unimpressed by her fast-breaking coverage of "People Who Resemble Their Dogs", but Dorothy suggests the whole thing is just amatter of editorial judgment. Rose isn't too disappointed; after all, she got to see a dog show for free. Blanche is delighted to find the person she's been sleeping with all these years is the person she loves. Even though she and Mel have been out a thousand times, everything's suddenly changed. But it has changed for the better? Blanche thumbs her nose at Mel's lack of appreciation for dinner at an expensive restaurant while Mel complains about having to put on a tie to eat food he can't see. Blanche insists she loves him - what other explanation is there for flipping out over his disappearance? Mel points out what she really missed was knowing "Bushman awaits." What he misses now is the way they were. Blanche agrees that a relationship is more than just sex and fun and videos and good times. Thank God what they have isn't a relationship. [CC] [TV-PG D] |
