Laverne DeFazio (Penny Marshall)
Laverne is outspoken, street-smart and cynical. A hard-working girl employed as a bottle capper at Shotz Brewery, she hates feeling that others are looking down on her — but that doesn't stop her from doing some wild and outrageous things! When cornered, she can throw some nasty barbs, but that's just her tough outer shell trying to protect the real sweetness that lies inside. Shirley is cute, naive, idealistic and even somewhat prissy. Highly concerned about her reputation and maintaining her high moral standards, Shirley wouldn't dream of being unladylike with her on-again-off-again guy pal Carmine. Until marriage, the only one who will share Shirley's bed is her Boo-Boo Kitty doll! Although Shirley's wide-eyed nature gets her and Laverne into plenty of trouble, Shirley always manages to hold her head high and remind herself and Laverne of how to be a lady.
