About Love Sick: Secrets of a Sex Addict

Based on the book "Love Sick" by Sue William Silverman. Inspired by the true story of Sue Silverman's (Sally Pressman) personal journey, this is the story of a married woman with a seemingly normal life who has lived with a shameful secret -- she is a sex addict, a condition that has plagued her through her adolescent and adult life. Her secret Friday rendezvous at a seedy motel sustains her. This is the story of her road to understanding and recovery. A provocative tale (a la "Obsessed") but also a moving exploration of an addiction that for many women is... More

I read the book and it was outstanding, the movie was almost as good. Awesome actors. I can totally relate to the main character and its not a femenist story. She is not blaming her husband nor her father for her actions, but it is a result of her childhood sex abuse.

Paraphrasing, the therapist in the movie states “You have to believe in something that is bigger than your doubts; a higher power. When you write where do your thoughts come from? When you choose tenderness or forgiveness, where does that power come from? This is not about religion. It is about trusting that some part of the human condition is decent. Forgive yourself for not being able to forgive. Forgiveness begets more forgiveness.”
I hope I am not the only one that these words empowered.

The very best book I've read on sexual addiction is "Love Sick," the one that this movie is based on. It's written by a woman named Sue Silverman and is very helpful for other women (even if you aren't a sex addict).

There are many resources if you feel you might be a love or sex addict. For starters, the books of Patrick Carnes are pretty much the most accessible texts. Try "Out of the Shadows: Understanding Sex Addiction" as an introduction to sex addiction. Also, there are various 12-step fellowships that are focused on recovery from Sex/Love addiction, with most of them linking to each other on their websites. Google Sex Addicts Anonymous, Sex and Love Addicts Anonymous, etc and see for yourself.

If you want to learn more about the real story, the causes of the addiction, as well as the recovery program, you might want to read the book (a memoir) upon which this movie is based. It's also called "Love Sick." It has much more about the relationships and, being a book, goes into more detail.

I think the person calling herself "aguystake" totally misunderstood the movie! The character, "Sue," is NOT blaming her husband one bit! What the movie clearly shows is that the reason she became a sex addict is because her father sexually molested her! Even so, it's NOT as if she's even "blaming" her father, as such, for the sex addiction, either; rather, that is just a straight fact: no one is born a sex addict anymore than anyone is born an alcoholic or drug addict; rather, bad things happen to children that causes them to act out in this way. Therefore, "Sue" isn't blaming either her husband or her father. And so, for anyone really watching the movie closely, it is very evident that "Sue" takes full responsibility for her actions--that's exactly why she enters rehab--that treatment program. How much more clear can it be that she's taking responsibility for her actions by working on her own issues? This is a total feminist stance.

It's ALL the husband's fault, right? Halfway through the first part of this movie, I kept waiting for the requisitite "justifications" to kick in! Sure enough, there they were: Husband didn't "treat" her right. He didn't listen. They even threw in the old- "he may drink heavily" schtick! Couple that with, "He works too much"- & you have the typical Lifetime Movie formula! Personal accountability, not to mention responsibilities for one's own choices, usually takes a backseat to- "It was his fault- either directly, or indirectly"! I know this was based on a true story, but feminism was fought to give women the responsibility of self-sufficiency! Lets come clean of our own accord! It's OUR OWN FAULT when we choose to cheat on our significant others! Not our partners! Will we EVER see a Lifetime Movie like that?
