From Michelle: I've enjoyed Candice Hern's novels since I read "Just One of Those Flings," the first in her Merry Widows series. Candice's award-winning historicals are lovely and witty, and the Widows are women we'd love to know. Candice's heroes? Well, they're dynamic, and varied, and always very, very masterful. I just love em. So, won't you please offer Candice a delightful TGIF Bella buongiorno...

I've been lurking on this blog forever and here's something I know about you Bellas: you LOVE your bad boys. The badder, the better. A recent GuestBlogger said she liked her bad boys to be bad-ass, kick-ass, and tight-ass, and everyone cheered in agreement.

I confess I have never been able to write a true Alpha Male, which is the core of a Bad Boy. My heroes tend to be Nice Guys. Some of them may be arrogant and controlling, but they generally turn to mush in the heroine's hands.

Anyway, I had this heroine, Grace Marlowe, introduced in the previous Merry Widows books ("Just One of Those Flings" and "In the Thrill of the Night")as the ultimate Good Girl. Prim, proper, respectable. Naturally, I wanted to pair her up with a Bad Boy! So I introduced Lord Rochdale in the previous books as well, hinting at the level of his badness, and inadvertently set up a level of anticipation such as I have never experienced for any previous book. I got boatloads of mail about Rochdale. Everyone was looking forward to seeing the Bad Boy taken down by the Good Girl.

So, now I really had to create a Bad Boy, which I'd never done before. Frankly, in real life I despise true Alpha Men. They're arrogant, domineering pains in the butt. Alpha and Bad is even worse. In romance novels, though, we all love them. But how could I create a hero who, in real life, I would probably hate?

Finally, the only way I could really make it work for me was to turn the Bad Boy into a Conditional Bad Boy. The world thinks him evil, but he has reasons for his behavior. He has issues. And deep down, he's not really so Bad.

Yes, that was a cop out. I should have left him bad to the bone, but I caved. Rochdale is still sexy, I hope, with a cynical edge and an unsavory reputation. But underneath is a decent man just waiting to be coaxed out by the right woman. I hope readers will find Rochdale a worthy hero. Even though he isn't all that bad-ass or kick-ass. I can assure you, though, that he does have a nice tight ass. Maybe that's enough.

So, Bellas, tell me: are you willing to accept a Conditional Bad Boy and give Rochdale a chance? Or will you feel cheated because he isn't really all that bad?

I love a good bad boy! But have to agree with everyone else it has to be a conditional bad boy, other wise their just mean not rough around the edges._______ Oh I have about 60 pages to go in Caressed By Ice. It is so good!! So yes once again Thank You MK you were right as always : ) LOL when are you not? It's starting to become a little scary ;)

Thanks, Orannia, for hunting down my books. I hope you'll enjoy them! And thanks for the recommendation of Caressed By Ice. I haven't yet read Nalini Singh, but I keep hearing such great things about her books that I must add them to my list of to-be-boughts.

I'm so sorry I'm late to the party, but I just had to add my penny's worth. I for one think I can handle a 'conditional bad boy'...I mean, reading about a 'conditional bad boy' :) Methinks I'll be visiting the library this afternoon (when do I not visit the library) and hunting down your books Candice!

Oh, and I've just finished Caressed By Ice. O.M.G. Mind-blowing and definitely the best of the series so far! I so can't wait for the Hawke's book!

Playground Monitor - perhaps it was on the list of banned racial slurs?

Why would the censor remove the word c h i n k ? It's not ugly. I posted and didn't even read my own comment cause I had to make a run to the bank and get them to find out who's account they'd deposited MY check into. I come back and see they're deleted a perfectly good word and made me look like a potty mouth. ;-) -- Marilyn

Stacy, I'm so glad you enjoyed the trilogy! Thanks for picking them up. And I had no idea Nathan Kamp was the guy on the LBB cover! Boy, he really gets around, doesn't he? :-) _____ Elsie, thanks for stopping by, and for loving Rochdale. _____ Playground Monitor, beautifully stated. _____ And Michelle, thanks again for having me. Despite the technical difficulties, it's been fun. Thanks Bellas, for being so welcoming.

The Conditional Bad Boy is the best kind. He has to have that little **** in his armor that the heroine can use to bring him to his knees. It makes him human. It makes him loveable. It makes him fall in love UNconditionally when the right woman comes along.--Marilyn

Buongiorno, Bellas and Candicene and so many new freinds! As of Friday, I thought this blog was broken and couldn't be fixed til Monday. So I grumbled and stomped off to my office to read all weekend (when I wasn't with my family, then attending WWE professional wrestling last night)._______I feel awful that I've been an awful hostess; not a spot of tea or a biscuit to be found anywhere. Can you forgive me?__________I'm so appreciative of your great sporting nature on this one, Candice, and we'll have you back soon for a day when all the tech's spiffy and up to snuff._______Now I'll read all the comments and come back. Thank y ou all for stopping in over the weekend!

Hi Candice! I just hope that I can finally blog a comment since for 2 days I was having a few problems.

Long live the Bad Boys! Especially Rakes. They always said the that Reformed Rakes made the best husbands. Lord Rochdale was just fine, mighty fine actually.

Hi Candice! Thanx to the glowing reviews at Michelle's place, I got the trilogy and devoured them. Rochdale was a delicious hero, I must admit, because he truly wasn't as bad as he could have been. I know some readers feel cheated by that, but I prefer, as you call it, the conditional bad boy. Don't get me wrong, I do love those unapologetic bad boys from time to time, but there's just something so...approachable about a bad boy who falls like a ton of bricks for the heroine and lets her know it (the scene in the parlor with the other Merry Widows - totally sigh worthy!)And, and, of course I would be remiss if I didn't mention that my guy Nathan Kamp is the guy on the cover in the background. Made me love it even more ;)

So Portia, maybe all the favorite Bad Boys of romance are actually Conditional Bad Boys. You're right, it would be difficult to stomach them otherwise._____ Minna and Buckeye, thanks for stopping by, and I hope you'll both enjoy LADY BE BAD. _____ MizM and Mary, I'm glad you love Rochdale just as he is. So do I! :-) I agree, Mary, that it is always heartening to see a heroine bring out the best in a hero. That's what is was going for with Grace and Rochdale, in both directions. He's a better man for knowing her, and she breaks out of her strait-laced ways and becomes a more complete woman because of him. Quid pro quo.

IMO I'd have to say that Rochdale was fine just the way you portrayed him. It stands to reason that some Bad Boys would be "badder" than others and to have one totally bad wouldn't make for much of a hero anyway. Besides, it is always reassuring when the heroine is able to bring out the best in the hero. It restores your confidence in being a woman!

I loved Rochdale and I feel he and Grace allowed each other to be themselves. She really wasn't pious and he really wasn't wicked. They were both a perfect mix once the veneer was stripped away.

I finally made it. I like bad boys but not too terribly bad that they can,t be redeemed. After reading through the comments I plan on reading the Merry Widow's. Can't wait to read about Rochdale.

I haven't read the book yet, but it sounds like Rochdale is fine just like he is.

I love the concept of the Conditional Bad Boy. I think he's the only bad boy type I really like. There's got to be a reason and a motivation for him doing the things he does and being the way he is, or else to me he just seems nasty... and not in a good way. "a decent man just waiting to be coaxed out by the right woman"... that's perfect for me. :)

Hey Sabrina! Thanks for stopping by. I'm glad to know you feel the same way I do about conditional bad boys. There HAS to be motivation, some rationale behind the badness. One of my favorite Bad Boys is Zsadist from JR Ward's Black Dagger Brotherhood series. Yes, he's bad, but BOY does he have motivation. I think as long as we understand what makes them bad, and that there is hope that love will heal those wounds, we're okay with them. Right?

I'm with you on the conditional bad boys thing, Candice. I like rakes myself, but not rakes who are just rakes for the sake of being rakes. I can't really write a bad boy or alpha unless he's got some motivation for being the way he is. Otherwise, he's not attractive to me.

I can't wait to read Rochdale's book!

IS there a Romance Heroes Hall of Fame, Janga? If not, maybe Michelle should create one here at Lifetime. Wouldn't that be fun??? :-) _____ Again,I'm glad all you guys loved Rochdale, my Conditional Bad Boy. Thanks for that. Are there any UNconditional Bad Boys heroes, do you think? Or do they all end up redeemed and decent? Can anyone think of an unapologetically unredeemable Bad Boy hero?
